A wonderful antique map of the Isle of Wight which was drawn and engraved by Joshua Archer (c.1792-1843).
Archer who was born in Barnstaple, Devon, and later moved to London, originally hand-engraving copperplate maps and then moving to steel when the publishing industry found this brought  their costs down substantially. Copper wore out quickly, steel did not, and this was important because each plate was individually hand-engraved.
Archer had a difficult life financially. He was bankrupted and also jailed for debt but produced many fine maps for leading early 19th Century publishers. His sons John and Albert also became map-engravers.

Archer engraved this particular plate for Thomas Dugdale's ENGLAND AND WALES DELINEATED, which was published in 13 volumes by L. Tallis, London (1843) and this map came from an odd volume in that set.
This is a guaranteed antique map with its original colour, folded as issued (no staple holes as it was "T" mounted) and is very suitable for mounting and framing.
