How to Choose and Use a Reed Diffuser (and Make It Last)
A reed diffuser is one of the easiest ways to make a home smell lovely all day, with no flame, no plug and nothing to remember. But a few simple tricks make a big difference to how well the fragrance fills a room and how long it lasts. Here's our guide.
Choosing a scent for each room
- Living room: warm, rich scents like fig, amber or oud feel welcoming in the evening.
- Kitchen: fresh, clean scents such as citrus, sea salt or herbs work well.
- Bedroom: soft, calming fragrances like lavender or gentle florals help you wind down.
- Hallway: the first thing guests notice, so choose something bright and fresh.
- Bathroom: a smaller space, so a lighter scent is plenty.
Setting it up
Remove the stopper, place the reeds in the bottle, then after a few minutes turn them over so the soaked ends are at the top. That first flip gets the fragrance going quickly.
Where to put it
- Place it somewhere with gentle airflow, such as near a doorway where people pass by, to carry the scent around the room.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators, which make the oil evaporate faster.
- Stand it on a coaster or tray, as fragrance oil can mark wooden and painted surfaces.
- Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
Making it last longer
- Use fewer reeds in a small room. The more reeds, the stronger the scent, but the faster it's used up.
- Flip the reeds about once a week to refresh the fragrance, rather than every day.
- Replace the reeds when you refill, as old reeds can become clogged.
- Keep the cap in case you move it or go away for a while.
How long a diffuser lasts depends on its size, the number of reeds and the warmth of the room, but looked after well, a good diffuser will scent a room for weeks or even months.
